Panic by Lauren Oliver
Rating: 3.5 stars
"She thought all you needed to do - all any of them
needed - was to get out. But maybe you carried your demons with you everywhere,
the way you carried your shadow."
Let me
start by saying that I love Lauren Oliver’s books, especially the Delirium
series, so I was excited to read this book. Heather lives in a dead-end town
and participates in Panic in order to win the money and leave Carp. Panic is
open to all graduating seniors and consists of a series of ‘challenges’ that
the players must complete to progress through the game. The synopsis is a
little reminiscent of The Hunger Games, but I didn’t find them all that similar
once I started reading. Having already been a fan of Oliver’s, I found this
book to be a little disappointing. The storyline was pretty good, but I just
found the whole story to be slow and it was difficult for me to really get into
it. I also didn’t find the characters very relatable and their relationships
seemed kind of artificial to me. Things started picking up closer towards the
end of the book and that’s when I started to get more interested. Overall, I
would recommend this book for someone who is a fan of Lauren Oliver and is
maybe just looking for something else to add to their bookshelf.
